Stat Hero MLB Picks for today

Here is a look at my favorite plays on StatHero for Friday’s slate.

StatHero MVP

Your team MVP scores 1.5x the amount of fantasy points and you lose points for strikeouts so pick someone you feel is safe, ideally with a low chance of striking out.

J.D. Martinez, Boston Red Sox

Martinez going against a lefty is one of the easiest decisions every time it happens. Yusei Kikuchi struggles mightily against right-handed hitters (.361 wOBA, .223 ISO since 2018) and there may be none better than Martinez. Kikuchi continues to give up more fly balls every start, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Martinez go deep.

Ronald Acuña Jr., Atlanta Braves

The Cubs somehow managed to keep Acuña from hitting one into the bleachers last weekend, but he still got on base six times in the series so he’s still red hot. Luke Weaver now has to try and keep him in check, but he’s still giving up a lot of fly balls and has allowed four home runs in three starts. Acuña is destroying right-handed pitching in his career with a 45.9% hard contact rate. He also has a good history against Weaver, but the sample size is small (4-8, 2 2B, HR).

Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels

Oh, look at that, he’s on the list again. Trout did have to leave Thursday’s game after getting hit in the elbow, but he is expected to be in Friday’s lineup. Zack Greinke has been really good to start the season, but he has always had a problem with giving up the long ball. He has allowed four already this season, one of which went to Trout April 6. Trout has fared well against Greinke in his career with a 1.030 OPS in 22 at-bats. Don’t forget your lineup is locked once you submit on StatHero, so if you’re worried about Trout being in the lineup, you may want to avoid him.

Aaron Judge, New York Yankees

I know the Yankees have been awful and I can’t lie, I’m enjoying every bit of it. However, at some point it will come to an end and going up against Logan Allen can help. His career versus right-handed hitters has not been pretty, allowing a .371 wOBA, 43.2% hard contact and giving out a lot of free passes. He has been great at inducing ground balls, but Judge won’t make that easy on him.

Flex pick

Matt Olson, Oakland Athletics

He has really started to heat up at the plate where he has hit five home runs in the last seven games. Jorge López has really struggled to start the season. He was able to limit the damage last time out but still gave up two home runs. His five home runs allowed are tied for the third most this season. Against left-handed hitters since 2018, Lopez has surrendered a .373 wOBA, .235 ISO and 40.8% hard contact. Last but certainly not least, Camden Yards is a positive ballpark shift for Olson.

Charlie Blackmon, Colorado Rockies

An MVP name but a terrible start to the season so I don’t feel comfortable putting Blackmon in my MVP spot. Vince Velasquez will be making his first start of the season after being used out of the bullpen. Since 2018, he has had issues with left-handed hitters (.366 wOBA, .225 ISO, 38.1% hard contact). Blackmon may have a bit more confidence since he has had some success against Velasquez in the past (6-18, .817 OPS).

Yuli Gurriel, Houston Astros

A StatHero pick as well and for good reason, as Andrew Heaney gives up a lot of hard contact (42.1%), fly balls (41.2%), and power (.198 ISO) to right-handed hitters since 2018. He has been able to avoid giving up home runs, with just one allowed this season. However, this Astros team has hit the third most home runs against lefties this season, more than any team Heaney has faced. Plus, Gurriel hits Heaney well, going 5-17 with a double and two home runs.

Carlos Santana, Kansas City Royals

In his short career, Casey Mize has not fared well against left-handed hitters (.412 wOBA, .290 ISO). Santana has been on fire over the last five games, collecting nine hits, including home runs in each of his last two games. Mize just had his worst start of the season allowing three home runs.

StatHero sleeper

Jordan Luplow, Cleveland Indians

A career lefty masher (.404 wOBA, .331 ISO) at $8,300 is tough to overlook. Luplow is off to a good start with five home runs, including three in his last five games. Opposing starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery has given up two long balls in each of his last two starts.

Andrew Benintendi, Kansas City Royals

One of the cheaper bats on the slate at $7,200 helps lock in some of the hitters mentioned above. Benintendi has really struggled so start the season and is still waiting for his first home run, but this is a plus matchup. If you need to save some salary, you could absolutely do worse than Benintendi.
